Psalm 103

I’ve been digging deep into Psalm 103 recently.  The first 2 and last 3 verses are calls to praise and basically set the tone for the entire Psalm.  Included in the body of the Psalm are celebrations of personal benefits, God’s mercies to His people and declaration of the vastness of His love.  There is so much to meditate on in this Psalm… stick with me!

I made a list in my journal of who is called to bless the Lord according to Psalm 103.  According to this Psalm David says if you serve the Lord then you are called to bless Him.

  • my soul (verse 1)
  • all that is within me (verse 1)
  • His angels (verse 20)
  • His hosts (verse 21)
  • those doing His will (verse 21)
  • those doing His works (verse 22)

Then I made a list of all the phrases  that include the word ALL.

  • …all that is within me bless His holy name (verse 1)
  • …pardons all your iniquities (verse 3)
  • …heals all your diseases (verse 3)
  • …judgments for all who are oppressed (verse 6) (this does not always happen here in this life but God will deliver those that are oppressed.
  • …sovereignty rules over all (verse 19)
  • …all you His hosts (verse 21)
  • …all you works of His (verse 22)
  • …all places of His dominion (verse 22)

Verse 1 says to bless the Lord with all that is within me… ALL.  I thought about what ALL that is within me: my will, my affections, my desires, my hopes AND my thought life.  How can I kneel down before the Lord and show Him reverence in all of these areas?

My will – how can I bless the Lord with my will?  Perhaps being in His word daily as that is where I will learn what His will is and can make it my will.

My affections – how can I bless the Lord with my affections?  How about by loving those He loves?

My desires and hopes – do I desire what the Lord desires for my life?  Or are my desires worldly?

My thought life – this is a big one!  I can easily get caught up in thinking about things that take time and energy away from things the Lord wants me to ponder.

I have found that the more time I spend in the Word of God the more I can bless the Lord with my thoughts, desires, affections and actions.  I am not perfect in this… not even close.

One last note, in verse 2 it says forget none of His benefits.  I like to read this as remember ALL His benefits.  There’s that ALL word again.

I find great comfort and peace when I remember ALL His benefits.

Intolerance

As my tag line says I can blog about anything that fits my fancy and today my frustration lies in the word intolerance.

I’ll start by saying I believe the Bible is the word of God from the front cover to the back cover.  I believe every single word in the Bible is truth.  I’m not someone who thinks this set of chapters or this or that book is truth or just stories.  Either it’s ALL the word of God and therefore truth or none of it is.  I believe the Bible is crystal clear on marriage and what God intended for marriage: one man and one woman.  PERIOD.

I get so tired being labeled as intolerant, homophobe, hateful, mean or any other label the LGBT community comes up with.  I believe our Lord designed marriage between one man and one woman and I will stand up for that truth.  I will teach my children what the Bible says on this topic.  HOWEVER, this does not mean I hate gay people, nor will I teach my children to hate gay people.

According to the Webster dictionary the definition of phobia is: an exaggerated usually inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, or situation.

I am not scared of nor have a fear of gay people.  I am not a homophobe.  When I worked outside the home I worked with many gay people and I guarantee if you asked any of them how I treated them they would answer the same as I treat anyone.  And, I would never teach my children to treat gay people with hate.

Test:  which of the following sentences are hate speech?

A) Your lifestyle is gross, disgusting and completely unnatural and I hope you burn in hell because of your sin.  All the gay people should be tortured and killed.

B) I believe the Bible is clear on marriage and God’s plan for marriage is one man and one woman.  I believe the Bible says that homosexuality is a sin.

Hmm… I would say A is hate speech and I have NEVER, let me repeat, NEVER said that to someone.  And, of all the Christians in our lives none of them have said hateful things either.  Are there those that treat people this way?  Of course, we are sinners.  People treat other people terribly for all kinds of reasons.

Why is it the left and the LGBT demand I be tolerant (not just tolerant but it’s rammed down our throats in so many aspects of life) of their belief yet they do not have to be tolerant of my belief?  Why is it when I stand up for what I believe is truth I get labeled a hater or a bigot yet those in support of homosexuals can say whatever they want and I have to keep my mouth shut.

We live in such a messed up world and I pray daily for our Lord’s return. In the mean time, I will stand up for truth and I will teach my children to stand up for truth.  We will do it in love but we will not waiver.

We’ve been studying whales with Apologia Science and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science just happened to have a whale exhibit.  Great timing!  The girls have never been to an IMAX movie so we decided to stay for the showing of the PANDA movie.  The girls were amazed and, of course, loved wearing their 3d glasses.

In geography we’ve been studying China and one of the projects assigned was to build a model of the Great Wall of China.  Originally, we were going to use sugar cubes but instead I found a 3D puzzle on Amazon.

First Measurable Snow Fall = Outdoor Play!

We’ve finally had our first measurable snowfall of this season!  It isn’t a huge amount but enough to play in and even though the temperature outside was only 3 degrees it didn’t seem to phase the kids any.   Jonathan had to wear his sisters snow boots that she grew out of because his were too small for him.    Hopefully, the kids will have lots of outdoor play time in the snow this winter.  It’s a really good thing their daddy doesn’t mind the cold, otherwise, they might not be outside except to go from the house to the van!  Daddy and the 2 oldest shoveled the snow into piles for fort making but I didn’t get pictures of the forts.

Our Version of Halloween and Random Pictures

As I mentioned in an earlier post I’m not a fan of Halloween.  Last year we went to a play (The Princess and the Pauper) that several homeschool groups put on and opening night was on Halloween – YAY!  This year we weren’t as lucky to have a play to attend so I decided to throw our own little family party for Halloween.  I put up several strings of orange and purple lights around the basement.  I set up our long folding table with a pumpkin tablecloth and set up a station for each kiddo to make a popsicle stick scarecrow.  We will use these scarecrows as fall decorations next year.

After dinner we played bingo with homemade bingo cards and M&M as the tokens.  Whichever kid won they got to eat a couple tokens.

Fall Festival and Pumpkins

Thanks to my friend Jodi (who is a fabulous real estate agent if you ever need one! She will work hard for you!) a few of us spent a fun morning at the Remax Fall Festival.  I took Jonathan, Alex, Belle and Natasha to Clement Park to enjoy a pumpkin patch, balloon rides (we didn’t take a ballon ride… I’m hoping next year), face painting, pancake and sausage breakfast and funny shaped balloons.  It was a bit chilly at 8am but by 9:30 it warmed up quite a bit.

Many of you know that Halloween is my least favorite holiday.  If it was just 5 year olds dressing up as lady bugs and dinosaurs it would be no big deal.  But it’s such a dark holiday.  The decorations and the costumes are just…. terrible!  I don’t get the interest in death.  The heads chopped off and blood and cuts.  Why is that appealing to anyone?  Anyway, we don’t typically celebrate Halloween around here but we did decorate pumpkins.  I’m planning a special Halloween party for my family for that evening. Instead of trick or treating and coming home with a bunch of junk I have a couple special games planned and something fun to create!  Here are the kids pumpkins!  They are sitting on our front porch now enjoying the crisp fall weather.  Thanks to my mom for her desire to do the pumpkin thing with my kids.  If it wasn’t for her they wouldn’t know much about pumpkins other then eating them!

Jonathan’s Birthday

Yes, once again I’m a little late posting pictures of Jonathan’s birthday dinner.  It was a small gathering but I think he had fun!  It’s hard to believe this young man is 4 years old already!  He brings so much energy and laughter to our home!  We love you Jonathan!

Esther

This past week I focused on the book of Esther.  I find the book of Esther to be very interesting and thought provoking.

The first thing I noticed is that the name of our Lord is no where to be found in the book of Esther.  Although His name is not in the book the works of His hands are so evident!

The king was giving a large banquet that lasted seven days…. can you imagine serving food and drink to many, many people for seven days?  I get tired after one afternoon of entertaining!  Anyway, on the seventh day, after the king had become ‘merry with wine’ requested that his Queen come before him so that he could show off her beauty.  Queen Vashti refused and the king became very angry and removed her as Queen.  Seems a little harsh but God is working!

The king starts his search for a new queen and this is where Esther joins the story.  Esther found favor with the king and all of his servants and she eventually becomes his queen.  All this time never did she reveal to the king her kindred or her people just as Mordecai commanded her.  Mordecai became aware of a plot to kill the king.   Mordecai told Esther the plan and she told the king in Mordecai’s name.

There is another plot that Haman has devised and convinced the king to sign off on and that was to kill all the Jews.  Through Mordecai, Esther learns of this plot to kill her people.  Mordecai tells her she must go to the king but Esther knows that to do so would be very dangerous.  I love Esther chapter 4, verse 14 (NASB) “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish.  And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?”  That is the Lord at work!

Esther musters up the courage to approach the king and tell of the evil plan of Haman and in the end Haman is hung on the very gallows he had prepared to have Mordecai hung on.  The Jews were saved, Mordecai was promoted and the Jews destroyed their enemies.

Where else is God’s hand shown in Esther?  Chapter 4, verses 16 and 17 “Go, assemble all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; do not eat or drink for three days, night or day.  I and my maidens also will fast in the same way.  And thus I will go in to the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.”  So Mordecai went away and did just as Esther had commanded him.  The people PRAYED!  God listened!

Esther mustered up the courage to approach the king… she said “if I perish, I perish.”  Wow!  God lifted Esther up ‘for such a time as this’ and because of her bravery her people were saved.

As I read Esther a verse came to mind… Philippians 2:15 “That you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.”

Now, none of us are perfect and yes God does forgive our sins.  However, that does not mean it is ok to blatantly sin and then say to God ‘Well I know this is wrong but… I’m gonna do it anyway.’  Hmmm… that’s kind of off the topic of Ester isn’t it???

Anyway, when it came to saving her people Esther stood alone before the king and did what was right.

Am I able to stand alone and do what’s right?  I mean, let’s be honest, sometimes being a Christian is standing alone.  Especially in such a fallen world and being surrounded by so many who are convinced that there is no God or if there is that His love is all that matters, not sin.

I pray that I can be bold like Esther and stand alone, if I must, to go against  the ‘norm’ or politically correct in this world.

Thank you, Lord, for standing with Esther and for standing with all of us.

First Day of School!

So, I’m a little late in getting this posted but we had our first day of school a few weeks ago!  Below is our first day of school pictures and a summary of what each is working on.

We start each day with bible and character time where we are all curled up on the couch or chairs and read the bible and discuss various Godly characteristics.  We usually sing a song or two as well and finish up with each of us praying.

Natasha started 6th grade and is growing into a quite a young lady.  She is studying swimming creatures with Apologia Science, The Mystery of History – Creation to the Resurrection, math with RightStart Math, Geography with Expedition Earth, typing (when I was in school it was called typing; I guess now a days it’s called keyboarding!) Spelling with Spell to Write and Read and reading lots of other great books.  She takes weekly piano lessons with the wonderful Miss Rebecca and weekly Spanish class with a group of close friends.

IMG_3186

Mikayla started 4th grade and continues to amaze us with her incredible imagination.  She is also studying swimming creatures with Apologia Science, The Mystery of History – Creation to the Resurrection, math with RightStart Math, Geography with Expedition Earth, typing and lots of reading.  Mikayla also takes weekly piano lessons with Miss Rebecca and the same Spanish class with Natasha.

IMG_3187

Alex is starting 1st grade but is still finishing up some Kindergarten studies.  I’m not big at pushing academics to 4 and 5 year olds so I’m ok with where she is at.  She will be studying the same science and history as her older sisters as well as her own level of RightStart Math.  She still likes to do the letter of the week activities that Jonathan works on although she doesn’t need them as she knows her letters and all the sounds they make.  She continues her weekly speech therapy sessions and has shown incredible progress over the last 2 years.  She and I spend lots of time cuddled up on the couch reading together.  She takes weekly piano lessons with Miss Tori.

IMG_3190

Jonathan is in Prek and absolutely LOVES doing school with his older sisters.  He has lots of fun games, puzzles, crafts and activities to do as he learns letter names and sounds.  He also has fun math activities along with shapes and patterning.

IMG_3191   IMG_3180

Katherine isn’t in school yet but isn’t she cute???  And can you believe she is already 6 months old?  We just started giving her mashed up avocados mixed with a little of her milk once a day and she loves it.

IMG_3178 IMG_3159 IMG_3116

I absolutely love homeschooling.  I can’t even imagine dropping my kids off at a building each day and let others get the experience of watching their eyes light up when they learn something new.
